Tempo mode
Pick a tempo. Every song sits there.
Set the BPM, pick your genres, eras and artists, and Tempo Tunes builds a playlist where every song matches your pace. Shape it to rise, peak or fade. Free, on the web and in the app.
Target Tempo
The BPM every song aims for. Step it, type it, or start from a pace.
A brisk walk or a spin on the bike. The classic dance-floor tempo.
Tolerance
How far a song may drift from the target. Tighten it when the pace really matters.
Songs from 112 to 128 BPM.
Free. Open the app, set the same tempo, pick your genres, and generate.
How the playlist is made
One number does the work. A playlist at a tempo is the oldest trick in training: lock your steps to the beat and the pace takes care of itself. Tempo mode starts from that number and finds the songs that sit there.
The library is tempo-verified. Two and a half million and more tracks, each one analyzed by our own engine, so 150 means 150. Tolerance says how far a song may drift, and the picker above shows the range it reads as.
Your music, not a radio station. Genres, eras, exact artists, the Obscure or Popular slider, and up to five songs it should sound like. Same tempo, your taste.
Then save it anywhere. Apple Music, Tidal or YouTube Music in one tap, or keep it in Tempo Tunes and play the previews.
Every control on the Make tab
Tempo is the first mode, the one every other mode feeds a number into. These are its dials.
Target Tempo
The BPM every song aims for, 60 to 200. Step it, drag it, or type it. If you know your cadence or your class pace, start there.
Tempo shape
Steady, Rise, Bell, or Fade. Anything but Steady turns the single tempo into a start and an end and draws the curve between them, so a warm-up builds and a cool-down settles.
Tolerance
How far a song may drift from the target, 0 to 30 BPM. It starts at plus or minus 8. Tighten it to 2 or 3 for dance practice or intervals.
Genre and era
Up to 10 genres at once, and any decades from the 1940s to the 2020s. An era is a hard filter, so 80s rock at 120 means all three at once.
Artist
Exact. Pick Grateful Dead and every song is Grateful Dead. Pick two artists and they share the playlist evenly.
Obscure or Popular
The taste slider. Toward Popular you get songs people sing along to; toward Obscure, deep cuts at the same tempo nobody else is playing.
Sounds like
Up to 5 songs you love, and the playlist leans toward their sound. A pick outside your range still shapes the mix.
Length
C60, C90, C120 or C180: 15, 22, 30 or 50 songs. Shorter playlists save faster.
Want the tempo to move on its own? Run, Golf, Bike and Snow set it for you, and Live picks every song as you go.
Questions people ask
- How do I know my tempo?
- Count your steps or strides for 15 seconds and multiply by four. Most people walk between 100 and 125 steps a minute and run between 150 and 180. On the Make tab the Run switch does the math from a distance and a goal time, and the BPM finder reads the tempo of any song you upload.
- Where do the BPMs come from?
- Every track in the library has been analyzed by our own tempo engine and most have been verified against a second source. A song at 150 is at 150, not a guess from the genre.
- What if I want the tempo to change?
- Pick a Tempo shape, or let a mode set it: Run from your pace, Golf from your swing, Bike from a recorded ride, Snow from a day on the hill. And Live builds the playlist as you go, from your heart rate and your steps.
- Where can I save the playlist?
- Apple Music, Tidal, and YouTube Music today. Spotify reserves full access for apps that reach 250,000 monthly listeners, so every listener who joins gets us closer.
- Does it cost anything?
- No. The picker, the app, and the playlists are free, on iPhone, Android, and the web.
